Have you ever got to your destination early and the condo/house you spent hours online trying to find isn’t ready? For some reason, they don’t want you to leave your luggage at the place, or you’ve check out but you don’t leave until later in the day. You want to see the sights or get some last minute shopping in, but don’t want to haul your luggage around. What is a savvy traveler to do?
Landing in Hong Kong at 9am, and the AirBnB not ready until after 2pm, I will be met with this situation. But I’m in luck, as there are Luggage Storage facilities at the Hong Kong MTR station. What, the same convenience they had back in the 50’s and 60’s here in the U.S., a place to store your luggage? But how do you find these luggage storage facilities? Well you’re in luck, there is an App for that!
The way it works is that the app has agreements with businesses that have extra storage room to hold luggage while you’re enjoying your vacation. You check out the app, see if the location near you has room, pay for the storage on the app, and drop off your luggage. The shop usually has a zip tie devise (tamper proof ID seals) that has a one of a kind code imprinted on the tag, you lock up your zippers with the tag, and you’re free to explore without lugging your luggage around. You do have to be mindful of the store hours, so you are able to get your luggage before they close. Most all offer insurance for the baggage, so you can feel safe leaving your snow globes and other valuable souvenirs at the location.
At the time of this writing, the average cost is $6.00 per bag per day. Some locations have hourly rates, some have a one-time handling fee, but overall it’s about $6 per bag.
Things to look for: Do they offer insurance? Tamper proof ID seals? Free cancellations? Hours of drop off/pick up? Delivery offered? Customer support? Flat rate or service fee?
I have not been able to explore these app, as none offer services where I live. The app that has the largest selection of places listed (as of this writing), is BagBNB. They have an impressive list of cities. The downside is most have limited places available.
