Avalanches and a Cyclone Bomb vs RV

Winter Living in an RV

Living full-time in an RV is one thing, but living full time during one of the worst winters for avalanches, cyclone bombs, and snow records in Summit County Colorado is another.  With my Costco snow shovel in hand, I’ve tackled what nature has left on my door.  Nature 2, Me 0

Tiger Run Resort

So far, nature is winning.  I’m staying the 2018-19 winter at Tiger Run Resort in Breckenridge, CO.  It’s a nice spot right on the river with two ducks living next door (rent free) keeping me and my two dogs company all winter.  There is a nice view of the surrounding mountains, but I’m in one of the smaller RV pads in the resort.  It has a small fire pit which I was hoping to use during the winter, but Mother Nature has had other plans.  With each storm leaving a foot of snow, I was keeping up the clearing of the snow up until back to back to back storms dropped four feet of snow in several days.  This affected everyone.  I-70 near Copper Mountain closed due to several avalanches, Freemont Pass closed dues to an avalanche that buried cars, there was even an avalanche that came close to the hospital in Frisco, Colorado, just a few miles from where I’m staying.  Ti

From Peak One down J Chute and created a new path, St. Anthony's Hospital are the buildings in the picture.
Shoveling off the two feet of snow on the RV roof and around the vent covers.

The RV is a Forest River Forester 3171 and is built for the winter climate.  I’ve recorded -17 as my lowest temp this winter.  The furnace has been a work horse keeping the RV toasty warm.

The skiing has been some of the best I’ve ever done, skiing knee deep powder in the Outback at Keystone.   But two feet of snow on the roof of the RV is asking for trouble.  Sure enough, when I was just about done shoveling off the roof, a snow storm rolled in and was making conditions dangerous on the roof.

And then there was the Bomb Cyclone, great another 11-21 inches expected.  We didn’t get the high winds that the front range got, but we did have some nice gusts that just moved snow into the walkway I just shoveled.  The Costco shovel has gone above and beyond and is still digging the snow, but I’m not diggin’ it so much right now.  I’m ready for summer!  It was a crazy couple of weeks for snow, but the RV has been doing great keeping me and the dogs comfy and cozy.

What do you do with a bunch of snow surrounding your RV?  I’ll tell you in April when I have to move the RV.

I can’t imagine dealing with that much snow at one time. Folks freak-out in Virginia when there’s a dusting! Everything shuts down!
